The 5-step activation sequence

1. GVLK injection - a Generic Volume License Key is installed with slmgr /ipk <key>. GVLKs are published openly by Microsoft and only work against a KMS host, never against Microsoft's retail servers.
2. KMS host redirection - the client is pointed at a KMS server. Emulators register a local service listening on 127.0.0.1:1688 and set it via slmgr /skms 127.0.0.1 (or the tool edits it directly).
3. Registry write - activation state is stored under HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\SoftwareProtectionPlatform. The KMS machine name, activation interval, and renewal interval all live here.
4. 180-day grant - the (real or emulated) KMS host returns a license valid for 180 days, matching Microsoft's real volume KMS behavior.
5. Auto-renewal - a scheduled task re-contacts the KMS host every 7 days (10080 minutes) by default, so the activation effectively never expires as long as the host stays reachable.

If slmgr /dlv shows the KMS machine name as a public IP instead of localhost, you are activated against a third-party server you do not control - know whose server that is before trusting it.
